At AFC since July 2018, GM since December of that same year. I’ve worked in the community sector in Ōtepoti since 2001, and managed NGO’s since 2004. First Corpac Trust, a service providing financial mentoring and support to people living with mental ill health and addiction. Then Prisoners’ Aid and Rehabilitation Society for a short time before coming to AFC in 2018 as Business Support Manager.
After 13 years of wandering carefree and fairly aimlessly doing everything from selling shoes to working in kitchens, I took what was supposed to be a short-term role as a mental health support worker in 2001. I very quickly realized I had found my “why”- rooted in manaaki and social justice. I recognized after a while that I could not do the front-line work forever and decided to focus on leadership- something I enjoy and a way that I could continue to contribute meaningfully, even if in the background in an enabling capacity.
Knowing that what I do every day is helping to make a positive impact on the lives of tamariki, whānau, and those in our community who need the support we can offer. The life changing mahi our kaimahi do every day, and the passion and skill with which they do it, never ceases to inspire me- it’s such a privilege being a part of this incredible organisation.
Whānau- time with my wife and our now grown-up daughter and son is really important to me. A guitar is never too far from my hands outside of work. I’m no Hendrix, but it’s an important tool that I use to keep my hinengaro in balance.
