How long have you been with Anglican Family Care and what’s your background in?

I have been with Anglican Family Care since October 2014, and I love working here. It’s a great caring environment and the best workplace I’ve worked in during my career. My background is in Information Technology: I have a Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) from University of Otago, and a variety of former roles involving technology such as programming for a utilities billing system in NZ, systems analysis and business analysis based in Czechia and the Netherlands (first in person then working remotely from New Zealand).

What inspired you to pursue a career in social work/family care?

I was in between jobs after my prior contract work dried up, so I found and applied for the role of Business Analyst at Anglican Family Care. Thankfully, I was offered the job and was very happy to join a workplace that mixes my passions of making a difference in people’s lives and utilising technology to do so.

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

Two main things: 1. Knowing that it helps makes our kaimahi’s (worker’s) lives easier so they can focus on supporting whānau in our community 2. Improving our systems and procedures over time to make things easier, smoother and more effective

What do you get up to outside of work? What hobbies or activities do you enjoy doing?

I am passionate about making a difference in our community so I am involved in organising volunteering, leading laughter yoga (silly and great fun!), co-facilitating a men’s support group and advocating for animals, our environment and wellbeing. I enjoy time with my whānau, time in nature, learning, growing our own food, video games, good stories and DIY projects around the house.

My wife Michelle has inspired me with her focus on understanding more about how people think, feel and interact, and what goes on inside of us and between us (psychology and relationships). In the technology area, I have a large number of influences – from the designers of the Commodore 64 and Amiga computers of my childhood and the way those computers opened up new worlds to me, through all the people who built so much of the technology we take for granted today that runs the internet and all the amazing technological wizardry we have at our fingertips. Most of all, those who are doing so not to make a profit but rather to benefit people, share knowledge freely (e.g. Wikipedia) and connect people for their benefit. In terms of creativity, the author Neil Gaiman has had a huge influence due to his imagination and amazing ability to weave story within story within story, along with Tolkien, having grown up with Mum reading me The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings when I was a kid and being fascinated by the imaginative world they described.
